Fall Prevention Tips
General areas:
- Proper lighting – stairs, bathrooms and hallways should be well lit. Use illuminated light switches
- Proper footing: do not wear socks or slippers on hardwood floors. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes with rubber soles
- Keep home clutter-free – hide phone lines, extension cords and cords for electric appliances
- Proper flooring – use no-slip backing or tack down rugs and carpets
- Use cordless phones
- Use long-handled brooms and mops for cleaning
- For changes in surface levels or types, use contrasting colors
- Keep a flashlight handy in bedroom
- Keep your home at a moderate temperature. Hot or cold extremes can make you dizzy
- Purchase a home monitoring or medical alert system
- Keep frequently used-items in drawers and cabinets that are easily reached
Bathroom – room where most falls take place
- Use support bars for bathtub and toilet
- Have a stool or chair for the shower
- Clean up spills or wet floor surfaces immediately
- Remove throw rugs
- Use soap on a rope
Stairs
- Use handrails on both sides of the steps
- Use nonskid surfaces on steps
- Apply a piece of brightly colored tape at the top and bottom of the stairs
